Gabriel Oak Essay

Thomas Hardy wrote the characters of Bathsheba Everdene and Fanny Robin with specific attributes and details. Both women have similarities and differences that either directly influence each other or other characters. The Victorian class system in the 1870’s (which is where Far from the Madding crowd is based) had four distinct classes. Two of those were the upper working class and the lower [working class]. Bathsheba would have probably become upper working or middle, when she inherited the farm. We can see that Bathsheba regards herself as being higher up in the social order, from the first time we see her in the book, by the way she treats Gabriel Oak. (QUOTE (Gabriel Oak giving her money for the gate). ) This expresses her individuality and the way she respects those in a lower class to her, or those she wishes to impress her social stature on. The nobility in the 1870’s didn’t mix with those lower than them, although they did have responsibility for their workers. For instance, when Fanny Robin goes missing, Bathsheba is worried and concerned about her whereabouts. (QUOTE. Bathsheba asking everyone to keep an eye out for Fanny). Bathsheba has dark hair and bold clothes which represents her personality. As she highlights herself as bold and dark throughout the book (QUOTE). This is in stark contrast to Fanny Robin, who has yellow hair and (QUOTE to describe her appearance). This attire is that of a poor woman and shows that she, aswell as not being able to afford rich clothing, does not have as much esteem as Bathsheba. I think Hardy makes this contrast to show the difference in class and the fact that women are not all the same. (As many men assumed in the 1870’s) A strong contrast between Bathsheba and Fanny is highlighted at the beginning of the book. As there is a social hierarchy between the mistress (Bathsheba) and the maid (Fanny) in all households. Bathsheba and Fanny both worked hard for a living. They were both pushed into situations where they were fighting in the wrong class and the wrong sex. For instance Bathsheba inherited a farm and money and had to purport herself as a man at the farmers market. (QUOTE of Bathsheba being at the market) Fanny Robin saw herself becoming the wife of an officer therefore moving herself up in the hierarchy. The Victorian Farming industry was male dominated and therefore Bathsheba was entering a traditionally male world. This allowed her to develop her character from an â€Å"unpractised girl of Norcombe† to a â€Å"supervising and cool woman†. This was noted by Gabriel Oak, who throughout the book acts as another pair of eyes, through which we can see Bathsheba. He speaks of her truthfully and helps the audience understand her and what she is doing. Bathsheba takes on the farming duties because she doesn’t want yo fail and is constantly trying to impress herself. Whereas Fanny seems to be desperate just to survive. She was â€Å"picking up a living of seampstering†. By saying â€Å"picking up† I feel that Hardy is trying to express her need to simply get by. Also in the time that this book was written, seampstering was known to be a tough trade, which was very poorly paid, and not a line of work to take up unless it was the last resort. Fanny’s actions contrast Bathsheba’s will, not to survive, but to impress. I don’t think Bathsheba would have allowed herself to be in such a position to have to take up seampstering, as she had too much pride and many more resources socially. Fanny Robin fits into the 1870’s conventions a great deal better than Bathsheba does. I think that this can be related to their childhood and parentage. Convention in the 1870’s was very much about women being seen and not heard. It was frowned upon for a woman to converse with strange men. Bathsheba broke this rule as soon as she met sergeant Troy, as she spoke to him and interacted instead of quickly leaving after she was untangled. (QUOTE. Bathsheba meeting Troy and flirting). A woman should always have used a soft voice. Fanny Robin was portrayed as a very quiet woman, and many of the local townsfolk described her as (QUOTE. Her quietness). Bathsheba, however, was very vocal and was able to take charge. For instance, when she took over duties as the bailiff. A woman was never expected to ask anything of a man in the 1870’s. Neither Fanny nor Bathsheba fitted this rule totally. In some respects Fanny did, she was very grateful to Gabriel for his help, and wrote a letter of thanks to him (QUOTE. Fanny’s letter). In other situations Fanny was not as respectable, for instance, she pushed Troy until he finally set a date for their wedding, instead of waiting for him to make his choice. Bathsheba also defies convention when she doesn’t thank Gabriel for paying her toll. This shows that she expects Gabriel to do it anyway, and considers herself higher than him. A woman was not to get onto a carriage or a horse. (QUOTE. Of Bathsheba riding horse alone). When Bathsheba rides alone and is, unbeknown to her, seen by Gabriel, she defies all convention. Even if she was alone, a normal Victorian woman would never take the same actions as Bathsheba. Fanny fits almost all convention, and is submissive to men. She would have been a model Victorian woman. This is in contrast to Bathsheba who simply had too much character to be a Victorian woman. For instance she travelled all the way to Bath, on her own, to find Troy. Which in the 1870’s would have been unheard of. Bathsheba’s parents were not typical of the Victorian era. The father himself was (QUOTE. To describe Bathsheba’s father. ) He had to pretend that he was single so that he didn’t have commit adultery to his wife. From this open and modern family, Bathsheba couldn’t have been expected to be typical and average. From her parentage she is bold and probably taught not to â€Å"fit in†. Fanny Robin, however, was looked after financially by Boldwood. She was very much closed as a child. The simple fact that she didn’t have a strong upbringing implies that she may not have a strong life, or character. The two women’s views on marriage are possibly one of the strongest difference’s between their characters. Bathsheba is quoted to have said â€Å"I hate to be thought men’s property in that way† when Gabriel asks her to marry him. This reflects her individuality and a slight insecurity about being tied down with another man. Perhaps because she doesn’t know what is round the next corner, and doesn’t want to have to be with her husband forever. Fanny Robin was very keen to marry Troy and when she finally had her date set she wrote a letter to Gabriel Oak saying â€Å"I am happy to say I am going to be married†¦ † This simple sentence shows the little girl inside Fanny. (That is shown many times during the book). This also shows another contrast between Bathsheba and Fanny. Bathsheba appears to be very much more mature than Fanny. For instance she doesn’t like to cry (QUOTE. Bathsheba holding back tears). The rustic characters in Far from the Madding crowd act as narrators throughout the book. They are the comic relief for the audience, and contrast the other characters by having a â€Å"common† view on people like Bathsheba and her family. The other characters such as Liddy, Bathsheba’s maid, see her as â€Å"almighty womanish†.

Blunt is a peripheral character, thus if you should take him out of the play there wouldn’t be too much of a loss. Nevertheless he is a humorous character and therefore brings comedy into the play. His humour is displayed by his actions, he can be perceived as a not very bright character as he falls for Lucetta and believes that she feels the same, despite warnings from his friends. He is not a cavalier like the others as he is a country squire form Essex who hasn’t gotten involved with the civil wars. Which is why he gets labelled an ‘Essex calf’ as he hasn’t any experience unlike the others and is also to some degree nai ve because he cant see he is getting exploited by Lucetta. Even though he is a peripheral character he still has the whole of act three in which he is the main character. This scene shows the cruelty and comedy, which Aphra Bhen tries to display. Blunts stupidity is used to Lucetta or rather her pimps advantage, as they know that they can steal his possessions and money. This is the cruelty of the scene, as he believes he is going to be with this woman who he is completely besotted with but ends up robbed and cast away into a sewer in his underwear. This however is also the humour of the play because it a rather situation to see but is quite the contrary for him, due to the fact that he is lost in a sewer, he’s dirty and in his underwear. Because of the incident in act three he is left in a foul mood and in total humiliation and his view of women is now a very narrow minded one where he sees all women as whores whether they are whores or virgins ‘as much as one as the other’ (4:5-36). Unfortunately Florinda Stumbles on him when his perception is women is of that, and he therefore decides to take his revenge in the heat of the moment and anger. This defiantly shows how the cruelty has affected him, for him to resort to this. But this is part of his character as he is not very bright think and therefore is not expected to take reasonable action. However he is interrupted and he decides not as he learns who she is. All the cruelty that is set upon him is easily done to him, as he isn’t very clever and therefore easy to exploit rather than any of the other characters. His personality may have caused some cruelty but this is because of his character, which also delivers the comedy to the play. Right from the start he is seen as an idiot. This is show by his actions and obviously highlighted but the Lucetta episode, and also his comments, foe example he tries to compliment Lucetta but is a pathetic attempt. So his whole character might bring on the comedy but because of it also brings on the cruelty by which Aphra Bhen refers to.

How do we explain sexuality from God's stand point, when we talk with teens, taming our own desires, and the sexual challenges that face us all? This paper will take you through the four different elements that will guide to a greater understanding of human sexuality, of what God has in store for us. God gave mankind the ability to have sex; his commandments are clear on how to become one with him. Sex Is not only for a few moments of pleasure, but a way for husband and wife to become one with God.I intend to explain to you the important benefits you will receive though intimacy, how and why one should abstain from sex until marriage, and how to develop the intimacy back into the marriage. Where does real Intimacy come from and how can we build the Intimacy with another person we desire? The meaning behind Intimacy Is finding someone to be close to that they we may find interesting. In the theology of love, intimacy is finding someone who you are willing to let everything go to find a special kind love that can be graced by God.Clark described Agape as the love for a person, someone you are willing to omit your heart and soul to, based on how you care for that one person, a forever lasting love, the complete willingness to change how you feel Just to be with that other person (Clark). By Intimacy we are allowing our own self to be seen by another, without regard to what or how we feel, but real intimacy starts when another person connects with your heart, and soul. According to the dictionary intimacy is defined as a close reunion or a combination of elements that connect together to make one (Dictionary. Mom). Above all you may think that sex makes a relationship, yet it is only he intimate form of the expression, sex is not intimacy only the physical form of intimacy. At the same time the relationship Is new, the couple prefers to spend time together to communicate emotional feelings, they may begin to hold hands as a way of physical touch, and they will date , discuss intellectual issues, they may pray together, and come to a term of how far of a commitment they may wish to carry out (Clark).First of all when the couple marries, they have decided to base their relationship on mutually shared covenant commitment and to consummate their allegations In a sexual union (Bailiwick, 2008 pig. 147). Premarital sex is defined as sex between two unmarried people who do not share a mutual covenant commitment.In the Bible, God defines premarital sex as fornication or sexual immorality, since the act of sex seals the union, whether or not the couple marries (Bailiwick, 2008 pig. 147). Wherefore, when a couple enters into an agreement hat they will not have sexually relations before marriage, they understand the Chastity that they must go beyond the â€Å"letter of the law'. Restraint from premarital sex, according to Buckler and Barman decreased the chance of sexual transmitted diseases, and unwanted pregnancy (Bailiwick, 2008 pig. 146).Whereas, refraining from sex before marriage minimizes the sins of the person, and leads them to God. Overall, a person reserve the ri ght to always be allowed to say â€Å"no† to their partner, having the strength and ego to say no to anyone who approaches them for sex without feeling obligated to anyone (Bailiwick, 2008 pig. 52). Ordinarily married couple will have sex for pleasure alone, not only to procreate, and feel closer to God. Meanwhile the single person should refrain from sexual interactions, avoid using pornographic material, since pornographic material gives the male an illusion of what the female body should look like.For instance, Gods words Jude 1:7. In a similar way, Stood and Sonogram and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire. The use of pornographic trials, the internet, and late night skin shows are all immoral ways that do not constitute a healthy sexuality in mankind, but the path to damnation. Whereas, a person who practices unhealthy sexuality will seek out sex for plea sure only, not this person may feel that they are in love, it is not looking or caring of the other's needs.Therefore, their belief system or core beliefs are mistaken by hormones alone. However, do not have sex for the sake of sex being only body pleasure, it may bring a few minutes of orgasmic sensation, however, it is devoid of relation meaning (Bailiwick, 2008 pig. 1 54). Throughout marriage the marriage it may be lose its appeal becoming stagnated or less interesting (Hart) Dry. Catherine Hart Weber describes it as men and women each have different ideas about sexual images (Hart-Weber). Whereas, women wants romance, and to talk, men only want one thing sex.Yet, women may start to see themselves as overweight, suffer from depression, and develop low self-esteem. However, ways to prevent loss of intimacy in the relationship is to discuss anything that is bothering the couple. Whereas, Pastor Chris Adams speaks of how a difficulty separating values and mindset between the couple, his is a time where communication is vital (Adams). Some steps that may be useful in keeping intimacy in a relationship are communication, expression of emotions of partners, romance, and the man telling the woman how beautiful she is.Although, not all people feel comfortable with expressions of their emotions, explaining this to the other will open new doors to explore. In conclusion, God did intend for mankind to come together as one flesh, only after marriage. Yet keeping intimacy in a relationship that is absent of sex give us the basic human need of skin to skin contact (Bailiwick, 2008 pig. 55) however, this does not mean that in the beginning of the relationship sex is necessary. Only when two people who deeply love one another, and marry, can they truly become one in the eyes of God.

One could take economic success as a touchstone to label a person successful in life, ignoring his of her other failures, like divorce, health, inefficiency, etc. Others may look at a capacity for overcoming challenges, irrespective of what someone earns and the nature of their private life. So who is a successful person and who is a failure? Do school and college grades and examination results provide a way of predicting or ensuring future success? If that is true, then we should encourage as many young people as possible to go to university and work hard to gain formal qualifications. But is it true? Aren’t some college drop-outs like Bill Gates and Richard Branson hugely successful icons of success? And should we automatically consider the millions of young people who have not had the opportunity to gain academic certificates to be failures in life? Success never depends upon grades. If success and opportunities were measured by grades then the corporate world and potential marriage partners would not ask for biodata in resumes, where other qualifications are also mentioned. Nor would they interview the prospects in order to find out what they are like as people, rather they would give a blind appointment to the people with the best paper qualifications. So qualifications alone are never enough, success depends upon physical characteristics, personality, and a willingness to work hard. Success is not getting a grade or a degree, if that was it then why arent all the graduates from Harvard, Oxford or Cambridge uniformly successful? The rule of success is hard work and destiny of course. If a student of engineering gets good grades but he is not practically effective in relationship-buildings and solving crises or proper planning, even though he may be successful in getting a job but it will not lead him far. On the way he is sure to fade out. If you look into a directory of successful people who are doctors, engineers and IT professionals, then you will notice that many of them dream to be employed by people like Bill Gates or Richard Branson, who are prosperous despite not having college degrees. In other words, prosperity does not depend upon academic qualifications but upon opportunities provided by entrepreneurs who may not be necessarily be highly educated. Successful entrepreneurs even benefit from not having academic qualifications, because going to college and taking examinations forces people to learn and think like millions of other graduates. This actually makes it less likely that they will come up with the truly mould-breaking insights and â€Å"disruptive† ideas on which successful innovations and new business models are built. Unfortunately the materialistic world has changed the concept of success. It has become a rat-race where every student chases grades and therefore the entire perception of success and prosperity has changed. Rather than studying to reach our full potential, we do it because we think it is necessary for a successful career. So we spend ten years in school and a few more years of our precious life in college to get educated, then more time is passed in hunting for jobs. Even after that we may find ourselves in the wrong profession and lacking job satisfaction. And then recession comes along, when we are told that our wealth has been blown away by the foolishness of expensive fat-salaried CEOs. Now comes a time when we go to work with a constant fear of losing the job we don’t enjoy. Is this the correct understanding of prosperity? So now the definition of success is changed. If you are able to save your job then you are successful! Can academic qualification stop us from becoming a civilization of drunkards, rapists and war-mongers, marked by broken families, domestic violence and crime? If you look at countries where the largest number of people have higher academic qualifications, they are the ones most affected by social breakdown. And would you call the conduct of the US wars on Iraq and Afghanistan a successful example of the superiority of the US economy and society? In fact true success is shown in having the moral courage to speak out against atrocities and injustice, showing generosity towards the poor, and respecting our parents. These are characteristics which are found in people from all social and educational backgrounds, but often absent in many educated Americans and Europeans, in spite of the universities they have been to and the grades they have achieved. Often academic qualifications have no real relevance to the jobs graduates are employed to do. A few decades ago employers in areas such as banking, engineering, management and government service recruited people straight from school at the age of 15 or 16, training them on the job and promoting them to higher levels of responsibility according to their ability. Today none of these jobs has changed very much, but all now require applicants have a university degree. Why has this changed? Health Teaching, Health Literacy and Reflection

Health Teaching, Health Literacy and Reflection Introduction Health Education empowers individuals and their families to make informed health decisions and achieve optimum health. Nurses can educate clients in various ways based on clients knowledge and learning needs. They can teach a diabetic child on insulin administration techniques; adolescents on sexual health; factory workers on back safety procedures and a young mother on contraception and breast feeding techniques (McEwen Pullis, 2009). The following essay is divided into three parts. The first part provides a definition and a brief discussion on health literacy. The second part demonstrates the key strategies to be used to advance the health literacy skills of clients with low health literacy skills. The final part gives a reflection of my learning experience on health literacy and how my knowledge can contribute to provide an effective nursing care in future practice that can empower clients to make informed health decisions. Health Literacy Health literacy can be defined as â€Å"The degree to which individuals can obtain, process, understand, and communicate about health-related information needed to make informed health decisions† (Berkman, Davis, McCormack, 2010, p.13). The Ministry of Health (2010) Ko ¯rero Marama Health Literacy and Maori report clearly indicates that the majority of individuals in the overall New Zealand population have low health literacy skills and among them Maori are a higher proportion than Non- Maori. Therefore, those individuals with low health literacy skills have a limited ability to access, obtain, read, understand and communicate health information (Berkman et al., 2011). This results in less knowledge to use preventative measures such as screening programs and vaccinations; limited knowledge about their illness, treatment and medications; more work related injuries; therefore, leading to increased emergency services, hospitalizations and healthcare costs (Nursing Review, 2012). Health literacy is beneficial to individuals and their families in various ways to achieve optimum health. One of the ways the health literacy is beneficial to the individuals is that, it enables them to access to health clinics; fill out medical forms; communicate with health providers; interpret labels and health messages; understand about medications and their administration appropriately (Ministry of Health, 2010). In addition to that, health literacy helps people to be aware of prevention strategies such as breast and cervical screening programs (â€Å"Health Literacy,† 2013). Furthermore, health literacy enables individuals to make better health choices and self-manage their chronic condition, thereby, decreasing hospitalizations and health care costs (Ministry of Health, 2010). Strategies for enhancing health literacy In order to improve health literacy of clients, registered nurses have to implement the following strategies. First of all, make sure that the environment is shame-free, respectful, caring and supportive where clients can interact openly and productively with healthcare providers (New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) College of Nurses Aotearoa, 2012). It is very important to assess the clients level of knowledge to find out what they already know and what they need to know (Osborne, 2013). Health Literacy is a shared responsibility, which means; health information is communicated in a way that both the healthcare provider and the receiver can understand (Osborne , 2013). While communicating with clients with limited English language, it is important to speak slowly and listen carefully and use common words like â€Å"cancer† instead of â€Å"oncology†. Moreover, avoid using medical jargon such as hyperglycemia, hypertension, etc; patients may not understand medical terms, abbreviations and acronyms that health professionals usually use. In addition to that, make the written language on documents simple, easy to read and understandable. For instance, using headings and sub headings can easily identify key concepts and clients can easily go through the information they needed (Osborne, 2013). Moreover, it is important to breakdown the complex information into small chunks, organize information and convey the most important concepts that the client has to know regarding their health (U.S. Department of Health Human Services, n.d.). In addition to that, identify different learning styles of individuals, for example, some people may prefer a visual learning, some other may prefer auditory or tactile learning styles (McEwen Pullis, 2009). Inclusion of decision aids and other teaching tools such as videos, quizzes, maps, booklets, images etc. would also be more effective (Osborne, 2013). Furthermore, communicating with non-English speakers can be addressed by appointing an appropriate medically trained interpreter. It is very important for the health provider to address and acknowledge any cultural differences and provide health information appropriately. For example, they can make the clients feel welcomed by greeting them in their respective language, displaying multicultural artifacts and translated signs in the health settings (Osborne, 2013). Instead of making assumptions that the client understood the provided health information, it is important to pay attention to client’s non-verbal cues along with verbal statements (NZNO College of Nurses Aotearoa, 2012). While teaching elderly people, it is very important to assess their physical readiness to learn new information. For example, some elderly people may have hearing, seeing and alertness problems that make their learning difficult (Lowenstein, Foord-May, Romano, 2009). To overcome this, always speak in ways that elderly people can hear and always make sure that the written information is readable. Moreover, encourage elderly people to bring a support person or a trusted friend to reinforce and clarify the informed health information (Osborne, 2013). Furthermore, use a teach-back technique to assess and confirm whether the health information provided is clear to the client. This technique will help to know to what extent the client can recall the comprehensive message and whether the client interpreted it correctly (Osborne , 2013). For example, instead of asking the client â€Å" Do you understand?† it will be better stating that â€Å" I just want to make sure I explained things well, tell me how you take these medications?† . Reflection On reflection, I have realized that a thorough assessment of client’s learning needs based on their age groups and developmental stages given me an insight on how their physical, cognitive, psychosocial learning abilities change in each developmental stage; and what teaching methods and strategies would be more effective and appropriate for that particular target group. For example, preschool children cannot think abstractly and they learn by watching and interacting with others. Whereas, adolescents can think abstractly and they can effectively learn through web and computer based resources, books, pamphlets, games, movies and through interacting with peers (McEwen Pullis, 2009). Evaluation at the end of the teaching session in my practicum helped me to analyze the effectiveness of the teaching session. This given me an insight of what teaching strategies were more effective and what other strategies I need to implement to improve my future teaching session. I realized that some teaching tools such as videos, quizzes and games reinforced the target group to interact and co-operate well with our teaching session. In addition to that, I also realized that I have to use simple language and avoiding medical terms while stating objectives to the adolescents. Furthermore, I realized that it is very important to document the evaluation on teaching session. This will be a base for our team when we plan another teaching session in future for that particular age group. In my future practice, I will definitely prepare a lesson plan based on thorough assessment of clients learnings needs. I will also use effective communication strategies that can reinforce the target group during lesson delivery. At the end of the teaching session I will also document the evaluation for future references. Conclusion In conclusion, Health Literacy skills are very important for the health and wellbeing of individuals. Health literacy skills empower individuals to take informed health decisions. Thorough assessment of clients knowledge levels and learning needs are essential to develop a good lesson plan for a particular target group. Following effective communication strategies and teaching methods during lesson delivery will reinforce clients to participate effectively and make informed health choices for better health outcomes.

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis

Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH or histiocytosis X) is the most common form of dendritic cell type of histiocytic disorders. LCH can be divided into three groups on the basis of the number of lesions and systems involved: the unifocal (localized) form, presents between 5 and 15 years of age, in approxi ­mately 70% of LCH cases, limited to a single bone or a few bones, and may involve the lung. Multiple bones as well as the reticuloendothelial system (i.e., the liver, spleen, lymph nodes, and skin) involvement and diabetes insipidus are seen in multifocal unisystem (chronic re ­curring) form which constitutes approximately 20% of cases. Typi ­cally seen between 1 to 5 years of age. The fatal form is the multifocal multisystem (fulminant) form comprising ap ­proximately 10% of LCH cases. Seen in the first 2 years of life and it disseminately involves the reticuloendothelial system, anemia, and thrombocytopenia. Eosinophilic granuloma, Hand-Schà ¼ller-Christian disease, and Letterer-Siwe disease are older names used when these were thought to be different diseases; these names should now be discouraged. Langerhans cell histiocytosis is characterised by uncontrolled monoclonal proliferation of abnormal Langerhans cells, which can infiltrate ubiquitously all the tissues or organs as well as lymph nodes. The histiocytic infiltration is followed by chronic inflammation and the formation of granulomas. Uncontrolled immune response activation is the most likely etiology by an as yet unknown antigen. Bone lesions are seen in approxi ­mately 80% of LCH patients. LCH has a predilection to involve the flat bones with skull being the most common flat bone involved, followed by the mandible, ribs, pelvis, and spine. Skull lesions can be either asymptom ­atic or manifest with focal pain and soft-tissue swelling in the scalp. â€Å"Punched-out† lytic lesions are seen in skull lesions seen on radiographs with asymmetric destruc ­tion of the inner and outer cortices, which results in a characteristic bevelled edge. Mastoid bone is the classical location when temporal bone is affected. Calvarial disease lacks periosteal reaction unlike other bone lesions. The term geographic skull is used when skull lesions grow in size and coalesce, creating a map like appearance. Vertebra plana (symmetric flattening of vertebral body) is seen with involvement of spine. Diaphyseal or metaphyseal involvement seen in long bones. â€Å"Floating teeth† is seen if there is enough alveolar d estruction. Other findings include hepatomegaly with solid or cystic lesions in liver. Lymphadenopathy with cervical predominance. MRI brain will reveal absence of posterior pituitary bright spot, and thickening of pituitary stalk if there is CNS involvement. Lung involvement shows centrilobular nodules or cysts of varying sizes, with mid- to upper-lung distribution and spar ­ing of costophrenic angles. Meyer et al conducted a study in 1995 in Philadelphia on 42 patients. 83% of the patients had at least one affected bone. All children with lesions of the skull base (Fig 1 ) and seven of eight with facial lesions (Fig 2) had bone destruction with associated soft-tissue masses. Fifty-eight of 96 patients (60%) had a solitary bone abnormality, and 38 patients (40%) had multiple lesions. By far, the most common bone involved in the series was the skull, affecting 52 of 96 patients (54%). In particular, the calvarium was affected in 45% of patients. Of the patients with calvarial involvement, the parietal bone was most commonly affected. The maxilla and/or maxillary sinus was affected in 8% of patients in the series. In the study done by Khatami et al 2010 in Iran on 48 patients, 38 of them (79.2%) had bone involvements; skull was involved the most (66.7%), followed by Pelvis (31.3%), Femur (31.3%), Sphenoid (30.0%) and ribs (16.7%), temporal bone in 4.2% Radiation Issue of CT Concerns about carcinogenicity of computed tomography radiation began in the early 2000s. In recent times many examination protocols and software and hardware modifications have been made to reduce CT radiation dose. The definite risk of radiation exposure is not quantified. So, it is better to follow the principle of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). This can be achieved by ensuring that the examination is clinically indicated and by keeping the radiation dose to the minimum with the help of technical advances as described below126. Tube current modulation is a very useful tool to control patient exposure with CT examinations. In this technique the scanner will produce less number of x-ray photons in regions of lower attenuation and higher values of tube current in regions of increased attenuation. This is of two types: Angular modulation and z-axis modulation. In angular modulation differences in attenuation in x-y plane is measured with the help of two localisers (lateral and anteroposterior views) and the tube current is modulated accordingly during rotation. In z-axis modulation the attenuation differences along the length of the patient are calculated with a single anteroposterior localiser and the tube current is modulated. The z-axis organ based tube current modulation is as much or more effective than thyroid and eye shields at reducing radiation, without the regional image noise caused by shields. Newer reconstruction technique called iterative reconstruction significantly reduces the patient dose. In this the initial projected image is iteratively compared with the model image of the vendor. Then the algorithm intelligently decreases the noise in the image. There by a noise less image can be obtained even with a low dose CT. But this technique is more time consuming than the conventional filtered back projection technique. With the newer development of hybrid iterative reconstruction which uses both the above techniques, the speed has been considerably increased. Accurate patient centering can also decrease the patient radiation. Other techniques such as optimization of tube potential, beam-shaping filters also make a significant contribution to dose reduction. Newer developments which hold promise to reduce the radiation dose in the future are compressed sensing, volume of interest and interior tomography techniques, and photon-counting detectors127-136. Low dose MDCT of PNS can be done by reducing the mAs. This is the most effective way of reducing patient exposure. The effective dose delivered by a standard dose MDCT protocol is 0.70 mSv in men and 0.76 mSv in women, whereas the effective dose delivered by a low dose MDCT protocol is 0.047 mSv in men and 0.051 mSv in women which is equivalent to standard four view radiography of PNS. Low dose CT can be used for the follow up of patients with chronic sinusitis and in tumors where the presence of soft tissue mass or bone destruction is used for follow up18.

An estimated 494.2 million acres of cropland is needed just to feed the tropics and subtropics for the next 30 years. However, only close to 200 million acres are available. Therefore, new sources of water and land are needed to grow crops. The writers of this article have been testing the prospect of using seawater in agriculture. This seawater agriculture is when salt-tolerant crops are grown using ocean water for irrigation. Desert areas take up 43% of the surface of the earth and this new agriculture technique can be done in deserts. Hugo Boyko and Elisabeth Boyko first used seawater agriculture after World War II. Many different crops have been tested such as barley and the date palm. The writers of this article however have been testing halophytes, which, is a salt-tolerant plant that can be used for food, forage and oilseed crops. They f irst gathered several hundred halophytes and began testing these plants in the desert of Puerto Peà ±asco. They irrigated the plants daily by flooding the fields with seawater from the Gulf of California. The best halophytes produced roughly the yield of alfalfa using freshwater irrigation. In order to show that these halophytes could replace other crops for use they tested to see if the crops could feed livestock. The halophytes have protein and carbohydrates but they contain too much salt. This limits the amount an animal can eat and dilutes the nutritional value. Therefore, the authors decided to use the halophytes as part of a mixed diet for the livestock. The animals’ meat taste was not affected, but the animals eating the halophyte-mixed diet drank more water and produced 10 percent less meat.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This new agriculture method has many advantages too. First, it is cheaper to pump the seawater than to pump freshwater. In addition, seawater irrigation does not require any special equipment. The same fields have been irrigated for 10 years with no water buildup or salts in the root zone. Finally, installing the seawater irrigation will not disrupt the ecosystems as much because they are installed on barren or almost barren areas. There are also some disadvantages to irrigating crops with seawater. First, a large quantity of high-salt drainage water that will contain unused fertilizer will be discharged back into the sea.
